EVEN Optimized Structure: Sailboat Hull

Optimization goal:

Maximum stiffness
Constraints:Weight and material costs are not allowed to increase, the manufacturing process may not be altered.
Optimization variables:Material, orientation and number of 32 patches can vary.
Results achieved:Stiffness of the hull is increased by 20% without increasing weight, material costs and manufacturing efforts.
Project partners:The optimzation builds up on a sailboat hull courtesy of SebSchmidt. The Finite Element model used to compare and rate the evolved hull designs is kindly provided by DYNE.

Hull geometry and the forces induced by the shrouds, the stays, and the mast during an upwind tack. Patch allocation in the hull for the sandwich sheets and the UD-reinforcements.

Genotype used for optimization. The parameters of patch 5 are shown in detail.

Visualization of optimized hull structure: The thickness of all patches of the deck and the hull are shown with different colors.
